Son Heung-min Scores Just 1 Minute into the Match, Nets His 2nd MLS Goal for LAFC

Korean superstar Son Heung-min wasted no time making an impact in the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) season. On September 14 (KST), Son scored his second MLS goal just one minute into the game, helping LAFC secure a 4-2 away victory over the San Jose Earthquakes at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

The opener came after Artem Smolyakov delivered a sharp, low cross from the left. Son sprinted into the box and calmly slotted the ball home, marking his first field goal since joining LAFC. His previous debut goal came from a set-piece free-kick against FC Dallas on August 24.




After Son’s early strike, Denis Bouanga extended the lead with two quick goals, giving LAFC a commanding 3-0 advantage within the first 12 minutes. San Jose managed to respond in the 18th minute with a goal from Preston Judd, narrowing the gap.

Despite several chances, LAFC couldn’t add more in the first half due to inaccurate final passes. In the second half, Son was substituted in the 80th minute for David Martínez, as head coach Steve Cherundolo looked to refresh the attack.

The decision paid off when, in the 88th minute, Bouanga completed his hat-trick, assisted by Sergi Palencia, sealing the win. Bouanga now sits at 18 goals, ranking 3rd in the MLS Golden Boot race, behind Sam Surridge (Nashville FC, 21 goals) and Lionel Messi (Inter Miami, 19 goals).




Although LAFC conceded a late own goal in stoppage time, the final whistle confirmed a 4-2 victory, keeping them firmly in the playoff race.

For Son Heung-min, this performance is another sign that he is quickly adapting to American soccer. Scoring a field goal within the opening minute highlights not only his world-class finishing but also his instant chemistry with LAFC teammates. Fans will be eager to see if Son can continue to rise in form and help push LAFC deeper into the MLS season.
