How Korean Comedian Hong Yun-hwa Eats Spam While on a Diet — And Still Loses 26kg

Is it possible to enjoy Spam while dieting? Korean comedian Hong Yun-hwa, who lost an impressive 26kg, says yes — if you prepare it the right way.

On her YouTube channel, Hong Yun-hwa & Kim Min-gi Kkongnyang Kkongnyang, she shared her go-to Chicken Breast Spam Musubi recipe, a healthier twist on the classic Hawaiian dish.

Traditional Spam Musubi is a rice-based snack wrapped in seaweed with a slice of Spam. But for a diet-friendly version, Hong replaced rice with tofu and used chicken breast Spam, known for its lower fat and calorie content while packing in more protein.

💡 Key Steps from Hong Yun-hwa’s Recipe:

  • Rinse the chicken breast Spam in water to reduce excess sodium and preservatives.

  • Fry the Spam slices in a bit of olive oil.

  • Prepare a thin egg omelet (gyeran-jidan).

  • Cut tofu into 1cm thick slices to replace rice.

  • Layer tofu, Spam, and egg in a cleaned Spam can lined with plastic wrap.

  • Wrap everything with seaweed to finish your protein-packed musubi.

After tasting it, Hong Yun-hwa exclaimed,

“It’s full of protein!”

According to H Plus Yangji Hospital nutritionist Lee Ji-hyun, chicken breast Spam is a healthier option compared to regular pork Spam. It retains the signature flavor while being milder and less salty. However, Lee recommends checking the nutrition label for sodium and additives before consumption.

Washing canned meat under water is also a smart move. Lee explains that canned meats contain high levels of sodium and preservatives, and rinsing can help reduce the intake of these unwanted ingredients.

Replacing rice with tofu doesn’t just cut calories — it adds plant-based protein and dietary fiber, enhancing satiety and supporting weight loss. Unlike animal protein, plant-based protein contains no saturated fat or cholesterol.

Plus, tofu has a low glycemic index (GI) of 42, making it an excellent choice for those watching their blood sugar. Foods with a GI under 55 are considered low GI, which helps control blood sugar spikes.

So, if you want a protein-rich, satisfying snack that fits into your diet plan, try Hong Yun-hwa’s chicken breast Spam musubi. It might just become your favorite guilt-free treat!
