While much of the United States is sweltering in intense summer heat, cities like San Francisco, Oakland, and even Los Angeles are experiencing an unusually chilly summer—with temperatures colder than winter in some areas.



📉 Record-Low Temperatures in the Bay Area

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), San Francisco and surrounding areas recorded historically low temperatures in June and July 2025.

  • San Francisco’s July average high was just 15.2°C (59.4°F)

  • San Jose: 19.7°C (67.5°F)

  • Oakland saw temperatures above 23.9°C (75°F) only once this month

This marks the coldest summer in over 40 years for San Francisco city and over 60 years for the international airport.

Astonishingly, Oakland’s July weather has been colder than February, when the city had three warmer days. Local residents and tourists are now reaching for jackets and scarves—not beachwear.

🌫️ Why Is California Cold While the East Bakes?

Meteorologist Matt Mehle explained to the LA Times that the typical high-pressure system that drives warm weather over California is currently displaced to the west. This has led to persistent low-pressure systems over the Pacific Northwest and California, causing:

  • Overcast skies

  • Lower temperatures

  • Prolonged cool weather

This pattern is expected to persist into August, although meteorologists warn that summer isn’t over yet and a late-season heat wave may still arrive.

While California cools, the Northeastern U.S., including New York City, is facing dangerous heat warnings.

  • NYC hit 30°C (86°F) with heat indices reaching 38°C (100°F)

  • Some Southern states are experiencing heat indexes of 46°C (115°F)

  • The phenomenon behind this is the “heat dome”, where high pressure traps hot air close to the ground for extended periods
